Stereotyping/labels

Regardless of if you are punk/gothic/greebo/hippy/vamp/a member of any religion etc etc I find there are a lot of people to argue about the point of stereotyping and/or labelling!! going as far to bully to prove their own feelings about you!
I know of one poor friend of mine who lives an alternative lifestyle.. he wears makeup, nail varnish and has piercing on his face.. this has caused him ridicule and name calling.. he is 18, the whole situation has caused him to have a breakdown! one may argue that a simple change of lifestyle will solve his problems.. but why should any of us pretend to be something we really are not, or indeed hide our beliefs.
We like to think we are an open society where we can judge people on merit and not culture or religious issues.. but we seem to have two breeds of ridicule.. on one side some people stereotype.. judge you on your beliefs and lifestyle.. the other side are people who disagree with labelling all together.. this is a complex and a real heartache for a lot of people..

I couldn't agree with you more. I for one hate labels. Yes, I too have fallen under societie's filthy comments like being called weird, satanic, strange, a mental case and everything else you can imagine. I have been told to change my image but like you said, why be something you're not? It's ridiculous and pointless. I say if your friend wants to wear make up then he should! People will be people and we can't change that but we must learn to ignore such ignorencies and walk on with our heads held high.
